Effing hurts. Almost as much as old-fashioned pink Germolene did, but in your mouth not on your scabby, bleeding knee therefore significantly more intimate and tear-inducing. Best thing about it is that it's an anaesthetic as well as a pain-killer so you lose all sensation on your tongue for a bit.

i wonder if it is a medieval/victorian legacy that make particular medicines resonate: if it hurts, makes you weirdly numb or tastes foul, then it must be doing you good. for me, it is the smell as much as the effects. see your germolene reference plus calamine lotion, olbas oil and that weird yellow (banana) or pink (strawberry) medicine we were doled out as kids. mum used to give us this foul south african stuff made of cloves when we had bad tummies. juno and thor would have winced at its yucckiness, but by jove, it worked.
